“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and
his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
Wonderful … Jesus is “the same yesterday, today, and forever,” and men who think Him common-
place, or at most only an unusual man, will sometime stand ashamed and confounded as they hear this prophecy
fulfilled―“His name shall be called Wonderful.” Today He is doing just as wonderful works as when He
created the heaven and the earth. His wondrous grace, His wonderful omnipotence, is for His child who needs
Him and who trusts Him, even today. Attempt great things for God and expect great things from Him and you
will begin even now to say, His name is WONDERFUL.
Counsellor … Not often is He called Counsellor now. Even God’s saints continuously ask of men
instead of God, “How may I find God’s will?” Conference after conference is held by both the world and the
church to find by human wisdom some better plan for earthly government, or for the church, or for the welfare
of our earthly life and walk. But how rarely do we bow together or alone to seek that Heavenly wisdom, that
Divine counsel, which alone will enable us to find our way out of the mazes in which we wander. When shall
His Name be joyfully and triumphantly proclaimed as COUNSELLOR by His people? By you?
The Mighty God … Have we doubted His might and feared, in the day when some foe was near? Hark!
The angels proclaim His name is “THE MIGHTY GOD.” As one, let us do away with all doubt and fear!
Thou hast made both the heaven and earth.
There is nothing too hard for Thee.
Lord, I bow to the dust and worship.
Mighty God, show Thy power in me!
The Everlasting Father … Who has not mourned a father’s death and felt the loss of his leadership and
helpfulness? The Child who was born in Bethlehem, who gave His life for us, is not only our Saviour and King,
but “His name shall be called THE EVERLASTING FATHER.” In His everlasting love, within His everlasting
arms, within His Father-heart there is pity for you His child. There you shall find safety, rest, and comfort.
The Prince of Peace … He who proclaimed to loyal hearts, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give
unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” is
rightly called “THE PRINCE OF PEACE.” He who brought such peace to earth was rejected of men, and waits
still to be crowned on earth; but He gives before that royal day a peace that passeth understanding to every
trusting heart. Have you received it? Will you, in loyalty to Him, accept in humble faith His peace today?
